Our CathedralPeterborough Cathedral is an Anglican Cathedral, the ‘Mother Church’ of the Diocese of Peterborough, the seat of the Bishop of Peterborough and a centre of Christian mission and ministry.
It is a community of prayer centred on Christ’s love – powerfully expressed by the great figure of the crucified Christ at the head of the nave. It is at the heart of a diverse and growing city, its most significant historic building, a valued venue and a focus of identity and local pride. It is one of the finest Norman churches of England (originally founded as a monastic community in 654 AD), a royal burial place, a building of national and international significance. |
Our ChoirSinging has been part of daily worship at Peterborough Cathedral for hundreds of years. The glorious sounds of the organ and choir continue to flood the building.
As a Benedictine abbey, generations of monks sang the offices. At the foundation of the Cathedral in 1541, the choir was formed along with The King’s School for the education of the choristers. Today’s choral foundation consists of c. 50 choristers, 6 Lay Clerks and 3 Choral Scholars, together with 3 Assistant Lay Clerks who join the choir on Sundays, concerts and major feasts. In addition to the core foundation, the Youth Choir meets weekly and sings a variety of services and concerts in the Cathedral and further afield. |
